Garth Knox was commissioned by the British Film Institute in London to write a new score for “The Informer“, a 1929 silent classic by Arthur Robison which they restored entirely. The film is based on Liam O’Flaherty’s novel of the same name, and is set in Dublin in the 1920’s, during the Irish Civil War.
Garth wrote for a six-piece ensemble, in which he himself played viola and viola d’amore, the other instruments being flute, bass, accordion, percussion and Uilleann Pipes. The score was performed live at the première of the new version of the film on the South Bank in London in October 2016, and recorded at Angel Studios for a DVD release due in April 2017.
